Applications of the STFT

This chapter briefly tours selected applications involving spectral audio signal processing, with associated examples in matlab. Related historical background and techniques appear in Appendix H. In this chapter, however, we relax historical considerations and focus primarily on efficient practical methods involving the Short-Time Fourier Transform (STFT) (defined and discussed in §6.1). Julius Smith's background is in electrical engineering (BS Rice 1975, PhD Stanford 1983). He is presently Professor of Music and Associate Professor (by courtesy) of Electrical Engineering at Stanford's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA), teaching courses and pursuing research related to signal processing applied to music and audio systems.
