DSK as EMULATOR - Author Unknown - Jul 12 4:15:00 2000

Does anyone know if it is possible to adapt a C6211DSK to use as a
JTAG emulator?

It looks as though all that is needed is to attach a cable from the
DSK JTAG to the target header and ensure that the DSK's CPU is
disabled (or dissconnected).

Has anyone tried this? Can anyone think of a reason why it wouldn't
work?

Dave

I have tried the same idea on motorola DSKs and it works. Your idea should work
as
long as you have the JTAG connection right. Let me know the result as I am
interested
too. Good luck.

RE: DSK as EMULATOR - Lars Skade - Jul 12 15:24:00 2000

Yes, I've done it. No problems at all.

I used a Spectrum XDS510PP emulator. The board itself will detect whether
an emulator is connected or not as if not it will use the parallel port for
getting data

Best regards

Re: DSK as EMULATOR - Andrew Papageorgiou - Jul 12 21:44:00 2000

No it won't work without modifying the 6211 board.
I quick check of the circuit shows JTAG inputs to the
6211 are routed through a set of 2to1 muxes, with one side selecting
the '8990 and the other the JTAG connector. The selection is made using
a pull up on one of the pins that is grounded on the JTAG cable.

It may be possible to short the 2 to 1 mux inputs together, so connecting
the 8990 directly to the JTAG connector but the PD and TDI pins would
still need to be modified out.

There is also the issue of timing and drive across the JTAG cable, most
of which use a pod to register the output close to the target system.

Hope this helps ( and is correct)

Andy

I presume this means the DSK board. I was expecting to have to
modify the DSK anyway

I was planning to remove the muxes to breakout the connections
from the '8990 to go to my target 6211.

What exactly do you mean by this? If you are talking about the
length of cable from the '8990 to the target 6211 I intend to keep
this less than 5 inches long.

Re: DSK as EMULATOR - Brian Carlson - Jul 13 8:51:00 2000

Dave,

Yes, you can do this. It does involve a few cut/jumpers,
but I am aware of a couple of people that have done this
with the C6x EVM which was used as the baseline for the DSK. The
DSK may be a better platform to do this from the perspective
that you can keep the cable from it to your target short. However,
the DSK interface is much slower than the PCI interface of
the EVM so it would be comparable to an XDS510PP instead
of an XDS510 (ISA) card.
