Have you checked out the communications library for the C24x parts from TI.
http://focus.ti.com/docs/toolsw/folders/print/sprc113.html

I used it to talk I2C out general I/O pins to a M24C01 EEPROM. I believe there are functions for SPI and virtual SPI too. I found the library very easy to use and the documentation good.
