MPEG-1/2 compatibility - Federico Sambilay - Feb 16 10:42:00 2004

Hi!

Can an output of an MPEG-1 (audio/video) encoder be
decoded correctly by an MPEG-2 decoder?

Thanks!

Hi,
MPEG-1 video will be decoded by MPEG-2 video decoder. I am not sure
about audio.

I think yes, MPEG2 decoder can decode a valid MPEG1
bitstream...

...but can an MPEG4 decoder decode a valid MPEG2
bitstream?

RE: MPEG-1/2 compatibility - Mody, Mihir - Feb 18 8:42:00 2004

Hi,

If the decoder supports MPEG2 BC (backward compliant) mode, then MPEG2 BC
audio decoder can play MPEG1 audio.
There is another non backward compatible (NBC) mode. If audio decoder is AAC
compliant, it won't able to play
MPEG1 audio.
