Technical discussions about Freescale (Motorola) DSPs (including the DSP56000, DSP56300, DSP56600, 56800 DSPs).

Motorola does not place the SDK MSCAN drivers on the 2.5 or 3.0 CDs. SDK and Motorola website says that they are "priced separately" but that's all it says about it. "Digital DNA" help emails me back a response to contact one of the distributors for price information. As I expected, none of the distributors know anything about how to acquire these files. Do any of you know how to acquire the "priced separately" drivers? At this point I'm thinking of figuring out how to make the minimal functions of the CAN that I need without getting the SDK. Is CANOpen protocol available for DSP8600s? Thanks |

Hi schwca (?) RE: documentation for the "premium" MSCAN12 driver (which I would call a mini-application). you said: << "Digital DNA" help emails me back a response to contact one of the distributors for price information>> I browbeat salesmen and reps for weeks before getting this doc. I thought their concept of "virtual pipes" was bizarre and inappropriate to microcontroller, let alone DSP applications. Whatever. It also did not support changing message IDs 'on the fly'. I hear there is an NRE cost of $3000 USD, with no royalties. Ordering number is alleged to be: ENGRCHGCAN. Good luck! (I hope this doesn't count as a "commercial" post!) If anyone wants this doc, and it is not attached to the Email you receive from the mail list, please Email me privately and I will forward it. I heard that some third party developed it for them, and this is why it is expensive. They gave us royal Heck when we asked to evaluate it, accusing us of wanting to copy the code and not pay for it - when we were just asking for minimal examples of how to configure the control registers. The Email I got from Daniel Malik (who found the doc and forwarded it to me) stated that one can evaluate it by just signing an NDA. So far, *every* useful answer I have gotten from D-DNA came from Daniel Malik. I would love to know your thoughts about this doc and driver (if you try it). Would you like my sample code for configuring the peripheral? The documentation for
the premium components are included in the standard SDK so that if you are interested in the
components and want to find out about them they are on the HTML help and on the SDK CD in pdf
form. PDF documentation on all the premium and non premium components can also be found on the
Motorola SPS website on the SDK product page below.
http://e-www.motorola.com/webapp/sps/site/prod_summary.jsp?code=MSW3SDK000AA&paren
tCode=DSP56855&nodeId=03z6wYqRXz3011
An evaluation license is available for all the premium components so
that this can be fully evaluated before purchase. Thannks.

Hello, I'm a new member of this group and I am also looking out for the MSCAN drivers for the DSP56F805 boards. I got the free CD from freescale but the driver files do not install with the license they provide. So what should I do? Please help. Hi Vivek and Gary Actually, I think that all Metrowerks offers is a $3,000 third-party software "driver" that implements "virtual pipes" over CANbus, but does not give you control over message IDs on the fly. I think the order number for the doc describing this marvel is "ENGRCHGCAN". It took me weeks to get just the doc from Moto. If you try to go that route and can not get the doc from your salespeople, let me know and I can probably dig out a copy. This is not a recommendation! Art Johnson gave me a hand - he had some extra writes that I never found in the manual. If the Moto manual had been my only source of information, I would still be poking registers and cursing the docs. I sure hope Freescale updated their manual chapter for this peripheral! Please help. I've lost my CD-ROM, so I have to guess that the code comes from Metrowerks. Go to their web site and contact them. They are very helpful. Gary Olmstead Toucan Technology Ventura CA |
