Technical discussions about Freescale (Motorola) DSPs (including the DSP56000, DSP56300, DSP56600, 56800 DSPs).
Hi, I am new to DSP world and know nothing about the embedded software development so far. I am targeting for DSP56L307 chip. I am wondering if anyone who has the development experience of this chip can give me highlights of the development environment and RTOS that can run best on the chip. Is CodeWarrior compatible with this chip? Do I have to buy a command converter? what kind of file format (COFF?) the chip can support? Any performance panelty if I write the DSP code in C rather than asm? Thanks, zhongsheng
Dear Zhongsheng, A few years ago I designed a product based on the L307 (but I changed to 56311 later, and would now use the 56321 for a new design). The Motorola-Freescale EVMs come with the CLAS software that includes an assembler, linker simulator, C compiler, and debugger. I have not used the C compiler, but am told that if you work at it, it can be useful. All my work has been in assembly language using the CLAS tools and they work pretty well. These software tools are free and available on-line at freescale's web site. I use a Command Converter that connects between the PC's parallel printer port and the EVM (or your own target hardware). The object code format is, I believe, *.CLD format. If you are interested, I have a L307 (and a 311) EVM (software included) for sale for $150 (150USD) plus shipping. I do not have an extra Command Converter to sell. I have no experience with an RTOS for the L307.
