vowel recognition/classifiction with changing formants - sulemanmazhar - Dec 14 8:52:16 2007

Dears List,
In vowel recognition, F1 and F2 (F=formants) completely
define/distinguish a vowel. But F1 & F2's exact place can vary across
age groups (& boundries very with context).
In this context, my questions are:
1. Are F1 & F2 alone sufficient for 100% (or >90%) classification of
all cardinal & short vowels?
2. If not, can you guide me to some relevant good paper/work dealing
with this vowel classification problem (considering the change in
formants depending on age groups or similar factors).

regards,
suleman
[Apparently, combination of upper & lower thresholds on F1 & F2 or
their ratios may work out using a rule based (if-else) procedure. Any
idea?]
