Query: 13 bit PCM ? - jay_coep - Dec 14 6:34:00 2004

Hello,

Can anybody please help explaining why GSM speech codecs (atleast
HR,AMR) prefer 13 bit uniform PCM encoding ? I mean what is so special
about '13' (Anything to do with SNR for speech signal?)

Thanks in anticipation.

Regards,
Jaydeep

Hello Jay,

The range of 8-bit mu law fits end-to-end into the range of 13-bit
uniform PCM. I guess that's the reason behind.

Miguel
