OT: Samsung to turn cluelessness into money - Rob Gaddi - 2012-07-09 20:52:00

http://www.samsung.com/us/2012-vacuum-tube-amplifier/?cid=smc-nahq-mult-0702-10000079

Sigh. If anyone needs me, I'll be tamping the powder in my musket.

Yup. They don't mention dipping that stuff in LN2 _at all_ -- so it must
be plain old ordinary crap whose crystalline structure isn't aligned in
an acoustically balanced fashion.

Tsk.

You deserve the best technology to get that pure sound out of the
vinyl.

i agree with the general sentiment expressed here (heck, i maybe we can
find someone who makes an excellent D/A converter using tubes acting as
the switches in an R-2R ladder, - you know, to get that "warm tube
sound") *but* we *still* have not mastered something that has appeared
sorta organically previously. to wit:

  http://www.mesaboogie.com/manuals/Blue%20Angel.pdf

  http://www.freeinfosociety.com/electronics/schemview.php?idP6

we *still* have not arrived at fully modeling the mathematics going on
inside a gem like this.

so, combine that Mesa Boogie with, say, something i once in my life
worked on designing algs:

http://aliens-project.de/blog/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Eventide-DSP4000.jpg

and you have something that is sorta-kinda the same thing, D/A output
goes into vacuum tube circuitry to get a wunnerful sound. some muskets
work pretty good.

but i agree that this Samsung thing is fluff.

I loved buying the old Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs half-speed masters and
playing them on my Yamaha YP-D70 turntable with a Shure V15-III
cartridge and an antistatic mat and Zero ion gun, but I have to admit
CDs are the bomb!

Oops. When the 12AX7 tube that I own has done its job, my analog signal
usually looks like Samsung's -digital- signal...
