DSP newbie - experiment tools - Frunobulax - 2005-01-23 21:32:00

What is the best DSP experiment kit to get for a newbie who wants to get
feet wet (especially audio processing)? Have tried EZ kit lite but are there
any better ones?

Currently, the Analog Devices SHARC is the most popular DSP for audio
applications. The EZ Kits are a good choice for learning. We make SHARC
based boards as well.

Hi Al!

Which board would you recommend to start with the blackfin?

Are there Alternatives to the ADI boards?

Best regards,

Andre

The Blackfin EZ-Kit is very good value if you can get one on special offer
like I did. I think it was < $100.

Unless, you are interested in low power or video, I would suggest that the
SHARC is a much better DSP for audio. It supports 32 bit fixed and floating
point math versus 16 bit on the Blackfin.

The $100 kits were over a year ago and available by special promotion from
ADI thru its distributors. I think it sells for $300.

The BF533-STAMP board is a GREAT option:

- BF533 running at 500 MHz
- 128 MB SDRAM (64M x 16)
- 4M Flash
- Ethernet ready
- IO Connectors
- Interface modules available: Video In, Video Out, Audio I/O, etc...
- ucLinux ready!!!!

Sells for under US$170 at Digikey, in unit quantities!!!

For more informacion, check this out:
http://blackfin.uclinux.org/projects/stamp/
http://www.analog.com/en/epHSProd/0,,BF533-STAMP,00.html

Also search for BF533-STAMP at www.digikey.com

As you asked for alternatives to ADI boards, there are a bunch of other
Blackfin boards available. Have a look at this:

http://www.blackfin.org/developmentboards.php
http://www.mds.com/Products/prodcat.asp?cat=BlackFin

OK, for high quality audio it would be wiser to stick to the SHARCs.

JaaC
