what error control coding do CD, VCD, DVD, MD, etc. use? - walala - 16:56 09-04-04

Anybody can give some detail information?
I also wonder if they are soft-output error control coding...

thanks a lot,

-Walala

CD contains a cross-interleaved extended (32,28) Reed-Solomon code.

More recently, LDPC have started to be one of candidates.
You may easily find ths fact by serching the Internet using e.g.
Google.

You mean for the new formats, not CD, right?

How about DVD, MD, etc. then?

Is solomon code soft output code such as Viterbi coding?

How about them?

> Is solomon code soft output code such as Viterbi coding?

Soft symbols are the OUTPUT of the demodulator and the INPUT to the
decoder. In no case (including Viterbi) is the decoder output soft.

That's right. To see further information of LDPC, it ccould be good
way to refer the presentation of the brief introduction of LDPC codes
sited at http:\\www.csee.wvu.edu/wcrl/public/slideldpc.pdf.

Right, the decoder output of Viterbi is of cause not soft, but how
about considering some enhanced scheme including SOVA (Soft-Oupt
Viterbi Algorithm), which tends to generator the soft output, so as to
transfer its output to its neighbor decoder for successful iterative
decoding.

Will LDPC be used in CD, DVD, etc. any time soon? Or it is anohter
attractive tech. which will never be adopted by the market?

This is not quite correct. Cross-interleaving is indeed used in CDs, but
the
(32, 28) Reed-Solomon code is not over GF(2^5) = GF(32), and thus is
not an extended Reed-Solomon code in the usual sense of the word (add
an overall parity check symbol to a code of length one less than the size of
the field). The (32, 28) Reed-Solomon code used in CDs is over GF(2^8)
and can be thought of as a shortened version of a (255, 251) Reed-Solomon
code. In fact, TWO Reed-Solomon codes are used in CDs; a (32, 28) code
and a (28, 24) code; and both have 8-bit symbols. Extensive details can be
found in Chapter 4 of the book "Reed-Solomon Codes and Their Applications"
(S. B. Wicker and V. K. Bhargava, eds.) IEEE Press, 1994.
