Hi, I am working on denoising of electromagnetic time series. I am going to
estimate the SNR. I have two questions: what is the meaning of the smoothing
parameter? what is the role of sigmoid functions on this estimation?

This sounds like homework. I think you should take some time to
reformulate the quesitons so they make sense - in the process I suspect
you will find your answers.
