Hello Kris,
   If your bandpass analog signal is centered 
at 'F' hertz, and has a bandwidth of 'B' hertz, 
then the bandpass sampling rate can be 'Fs' 
that satisfies the following:


       2F - B            2F + B
      --------  > Fs >  --------
          m               m + 1

Note: in the above expression the '>' symbol 
means "equal to or greater than."

The variable 'm' is an integer and can be any 
positive integer just so long as Fs is greater 
than 2B.

the easy way to do this is to consider that all the harmonics of the
sampling frequency are present and each one works just as well as the
fundamental to downconvert and sample signals that are near them...   (which
is not exactly true but its a good start)

Yes I understand Nyquist sampling well. I am interested in IF/bandpass
sampling. What I want to know is how the sample rate is chosen for
sample rate conversion when the band of interest is not baseband and
its associated spectra in a practical system.

I neglected to mention:  This article: http://www.wescottdesign.com/
articles/Sampling/sampling.pdf has a few paragraphs pertaining to IF 
sampling, mostly having to do with setting the sampling rate in a sub-
sampled system.  If you want to know about IF sampling in general, it 
leaves out a lot more than it puts in, but you may find it useful.

ADC?  When and how to use an external sampler?  Whatever other questions
