If you had reason (as you were appealing to above) you would realize that this discussion is about people who are regular posters to this group. Your point is absurd because 1. Everyone knows that the posts coming from the sources you are referring to will never be affected by protests from members of this group. 2. It seems to make a tie that Randy's off topic post is the equivalent to the spam posts 2a. (If Randy's post is the equivalent, then why not go have a personal "you are driving away traffic" discussion directed at the person who posts the stuff you are discussing above?) 3. Who gets to determine what is reasonable? The beauty of an un-moderated group is that each reader gets to apply their own filter as to what is reasonable. If you want "reasonable" go find a moderated group.

I take a broader view of newsgroups, especially given that they are pretty much dead these days. Why shouldn't a group like this be a place where people who are interested in DSP discuss DSP and also discuss other things on their mind? As far as others leaving or staying because of off topic content....Nobody has control over that in an un-moderated group. Not a bada analogy, and low SNR has killed more groups than I can think of. /Currently/ this group has a reasonable SNR; I hope nobody unwittingly changes that.

You might consider that a newsgroup dedicated to a particular topic will be the most useful to its users, and have the highest SNR, if the pollution levels are kept low. This applies to the usual things like people posting for no purpose other than calling other posters derogatory names, etc. "Feel free to not read it," applies to all of those. "Feel free to not look at it," applies to trash left in a park, too, but it's still detracting from the experience for others, and doesn't speak well for the one who left it. I would say of international interest. Local politics is kinda boring for the rest of us. For the rest of us the only time we see americans is when they bomb other countries or in the movies.
