Oh, OK.  Well, that's an encouraging starting point at least.  I'd be both
disappointed and surprised to find that the software limitations made the
kit not very useful.  All to do now is to proceed!

Blackfin). Its my understanding that this does not mean you can't access 
the remaining memory. It means program size is restricted. I may be the 
wrong person to ask since we have Full Visyual DSP licenses without the 
restrictions.

I noticed that as well.  It says 20kB.  How do I assess that with respect to
what the chip is capable of and what sort of capability one might want to
program?  It sounds small compared to what memory's available.  I'm just
looking for a sense of it.

You got also a kind of JTAG emulator... The USB interface on this kit
goes to the JTAG pins, so it's like having the emulator. The
difference might be that with an emulator (5K) you can interface to
_any_ ADI DSP based system, as long as it incorporates a JATG
interface, not limited to the kit on hand. It would be certainly
faster, robust, DSP platform-independent, etc...

Another difference is that the EzKit version of VDSP++ will only work
with the kit actually connected, kind of dongle. So, you won't be able
to use your SW for developing for other DSP chips.

Those significative differeces come to my mind at this moment. There
are some others, no doubt.

I received the BF533 version a few days ago.  This is very much a learning
tool for me as I've not done hands-on programming of one of these before -
ever.  I'm trying to figure it out and have a couple of questions someone
may be able to answer directly:

The documentation says that user memory is limited to 20kB.  That seems
quite restrictive in relation to the memory that's available.  How should I
be interpreting this?  Expecting to deal with it?

They offer an emulator for around $5K.  So, what is it that I have in this
$99 kit with Visual DSP++?  What is it I don't have / can't do with it?
Just a little context would help me understand.

I received my Blackfin EZ-KIT Lite (on special offer last month) yesterday,
and got it working this afternoon. I had problems getting WinME to start
properly after installing the software, and eventually tried disabling the
Norton virus software. This seemed to do the trick.

I was thinking of creating a Yahoo group for users, but found that a
Blackfin Interest Group already existed, so I joined it. It isn't very
active (only 15 members and six messages), but now that there are lots of
kits out there, more people might join.
