That depends on the DSP and the codec.
AC97, I2C (2-wire) and SPI are the ones I've worked with.
Hooking up DSPs to AC97 codecs usually involves a bit of low-level coding.
A lot of DSPs support the AC97 clocking, and call themselves
"AC97-ready", but they don't have any support for the actual framing of
the protocol or anything, so you have to write that all yourself.
AC97 codecs also seem to be dying out of late. My Philips and TI reps.
have both said that the AC97 codecs from those two companies are being
phased out.
2-wire and SPI seem more widespread these days, and I know that in the TI
world, they have a lot of ready-made software for talking to these codecs.
