Try
Buck & al: "Computer Explorations in Signals and Systems
Using MATLAB "
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0130421553/qid=1118046184/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl14/104-1559870-1827169?v=glance&s=books&n=507846
The book starts out with pretty basic matlab (although this book
does not intend to teach matlab as such), and goes on to use
matlab to go through variuous excersises and projects concerned
with signals and systems. It's been a while since I browsed the
book, so am not sure if you need the signal processing toolbox
as well.
You would need working knowledge of matlab at least on the
level of the "Getting Started with Matlab" manual before attempting
to tackle the above book. The manual can be downloaded from TMW
as a PDF file and printed by yourself, so it will not cost you
more than downloading time and printing paper.
