Hello,

For all of you, users of 2181 EzLite, remember that the UART communications
is being bit-banged by using the onchip timer. If for some reason you modify
it (mask the interrupt, change timer, etc) you will lose communications,
regardless of the VDSP version that you use.

Read carefully the kit's documentation and code for provided examples, and
you'll figure it out how to proceed in order to get it working properly.

Regards.

If you really have just a 218x simple audio design, We have our DSP-8300. This is a credit card sized module with an AC-97 audio codec. You download programs via RS-232 (can use USB adapter). We supply the old GNU based assembler and linker. The dev kit is $250. DSP-8300 modules are as low as $125 ea (Qty 100) We also have SHARC based solutions that include an Analog Devices EZ-Kit style debugger. These boards are supported by VDSP (uncluding the free KIT license). -- Al Clark Danville Signal Processing, Inc. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Purveyors of Fine DSP Hardware and other Cool Stuff Available at http://www.danvillesignal.com

The VisualDSP++ environment becomes unresponsive when communication with
the target simulator/emulator happens. When you've got a HPUSB-ICE or
other reasonably fast emulator hooked up, it's barely noticeable because
everything happens fast. The USB emulators built into the EZ-KITs are
painfully slow, and for something like using a 21065L EZ-KIT with a
serial bus, VisualDSP++ becomes almost completely unusable - I imagine
the 2181 EZ-KIT isn't far off.

It's part of their design - too much coupling between the target and the
IDE. If the target messes up for whatever reason - eg. if the board
you've got the emulator on starts doing Very Bad Things and you have to
kill power to it, this will hang VisualDSP++. It's annoying, I've
written to ADI about it, i'm hoping their next big release will bring
more separation between the target control and IDE. So by all means,
e-mail ADI and bitch and complain...

I have similiar problems with my system with Visual DSP and the 2181 Ez Kit, I can never reload a new program after I have run one, and the halt command often fails and crashes the program. I suspect at least the latter situation may be due to messing with the timer, or at least not putting it in the right state. I've had this running on two different pc's and both have the same problems (both xp). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, what's a good cheap replacement for an EZ-kit? Ryan

I have it and it seems to work (the old Win3.1 programm to download programs to the dsp works quite unreliably under Win2k though). But it's all old DOS software and since AD offers pretty and colorful VisualDSP++ with support for the adsp2181 I wanted to try it. I will of course use those old tools if I don't get VisualDSP to work. But I still hope that it's just a problem with my machine and that plenty people here will tell me that it works perfectly for them... Does anyone use the combination adsp2181 ez-kit and VisualDSP successfully? Sebastian

I've still got mine, but haven't used it for a long time. It always
worked OK with the original software supplied with it, and it also
worked with the gnu-based original Visual DSP. I think you can download
all that stuff from the ADI web site, if you don't have it.

Hi everyone,

I just dug up my ancient ADDS-21xx-EZLITE kit. I bought it many years
ago and never really used it for much more that trying the samples.

I thought I might give it another try and installed the VisualDSP++ 3.5
Testdrive vrom the Analog.com website. Hooked it all up and: it sucks.

The IDE hangs after almost every program download. With a lot of
patience and a few restarts I got a few of the included samples to run
in the debugger but as soon as I try to download a second program the
IDE hangs again. It always throws messages about wrong checksums at me.

I tried different serial cables besause of the message about wrong
checksums but it didn't help. Do other users experience similar problems
or is it just some problem with my system?

Thanks
Sebastian
