I guess you are interested in "near shanon limit" transmission. You may
search some papers on "LDPC" coding and also "Turbo" coding but it
depends on your channel.

I am not sure what you are refering to "Reed" coding - probably, you
might have tried  the  "Reed-Solomon" coding to get expected results!
