As I said, I haven't looked into this in depth. But can't you make
flinger sing by writing a scheme program?

that's really cool, but i think it's a real female vocalist singing at least
one line (the monotone low note) with possibly a Digitech Vocalist (hooked
up to a MIDI keyboard) doing the harmonies, if not the singer doing the
harmonies herself.

It looks like flinger takes MIDI files as input, not ASCII files with
musical annotation.  Basically, what I want is to create a file along
the lines of:

Ma(E)-ry(D) had(C) a(D) lit(E)-tle(E) .....

to get a sung version of the song.  I don't care about the synax of the
ASCII file.

Sorry, I made a mistake. Some time ago when I was looking at festival,
I noticed a webpage describing the use of festival to synthesise sung
voice. Upon seeing your post I did a quick search and posted what I
thought was the same thing. My description of what to look at in the
quoted page was wrong, as the festival bit down the bottom (even with
their new voices) is normal text to speech.

After noting I'd sent you off-track, I had another look. Flinger is the
system I was thinking off:

But again I haven't used it or looked deeply into it myself. So I'll
shut up now before I dig myself deeper into a hole :-)

I haven't used their system, or even looked carefully into how it would

find. The demos sound very impressive to my ears.

some sort (any sort, really).

Ideally, the software would run on Linux, but I'll take Windows.
