which was written in 70s
is a very good start point.

2. The IEEE Transactions on Acoustics, Speech and Signal processing
esp. pre 1990 is
the place where to get the most tractable mathematics of audio
compression.

3. Another place to look is the G.726/G.729 Audio coding standards.

For free, you can look at http://www.dspguide.com. More specific, you would have to explain what you mean by a "good" transform for audio signals.
