I just found out that V4.0 which was just released will not support any of the older emulators such as the Summit and Mountain ICE. I am extremely disappointed with ADI on this one. I have always been impressed with their upgrade policy and thought it was right minded since they are in the business of selling chips, not compilers and emulators. This update, however, basically comes with a price tag of $4000 for me. I could understand them not adding new devices for the older emulators but they already have the older emulators supported in 3.5 for most of the current devices. This seems like an artificial restriction to force upgrading emulators. I am perfectly happy with my Summit Ice so I guess I won't be moving beyond V3.5 for some time. Well, I've regained my appreciation in ADI. After sending an email detailing my frustration with the situation, I was offered an upgrade to my current emulator on very agreeable terms. Thanks ADI. I agree with Steve. Another clear message is that the ADSP-21xx has come to the end of its life. Seen that? That said: 1. The 21xx is not C friendly, the 218x does not support JTAG, There is not a compelling reason to build better tools for this family 2. The Blackfin is clearly the preferred part for new "clean sheet of paper" 16 bit designs. It doesn't make a lot of sense for the Tools group to waste resources on an architecture that is in harvest mode. VDSP 3.5 is fine for newer 21xx designs and you still have the old DOS tools for the older 218x designs. At the upcoming Embedded Systems Conference in San Francisco. There will be Blackfin, SHARC and TigerSHARC stations. I don't think there has been a 21xx station for the last several years (Since the debut of the BF 531/32/33), so dropping 21xx support should not come as a big surprise. I'll be at the SHARC station with our newest dspstak boards. I hope many of you will stop by. Hi, Yes Al, not a surprise. And of course, the enhancements on the tools don't make much sense for the ADSP-21xx, in (big) part because there isn't much benefit to get from it. The current tools make what it is necessary for the ADSP-21xx. As you say, the family is actively being used. But since the bigger efforts are made on Blackfin, all of the attention is geared towards it. Anyways, I love the 21xx. I feel gratitude to it, mainly because it made the learning of DSP easy for me. I won't forget it! --- Al Clark <> wrote: > >I agree with Steve. > > > >Another clear message is that the ADSP-21xx has > come > >to the end of its life. > > > >Seen that? > > ADI sells lots of 21xx parts.
