How about predicting the impact of $700B in corporate welfare?

If the downside is that loans will be harder to get, why is that a bad thing? Wasn't the problem that they were too easy to get? John

I think a basic problem is that very few people (if any) have enough visibility into the economy as a system and the problems with the institutions to understand whether it'll really help or not. Hence the bickering in Washington...people won't agree. I do trust Paulson, I don't think he has motivation to not be genuine about this, and the vast majority of the pundits and talking heads and guests on CNBC seem to think it's necessary. Those against it also tend to say we're doomed either way, so why take on the debt? It's all Greenspan's fault, though. ;) Eric Jacobsen Minister of Algorithms Abineau Communications http://www.ericjacobsen.org Blog: http://www.dsprelated.com/blogs-1/hf/Eric_Jacobsen.php

Final year of *what*? High school. BS program. MS program. PhD program. Makes a difference y'know. Then, what are your interests? What would be fun to do? Fred

Our local newspaper here in the Raleigh, NC area is the News and Observer. They have a "Reader Opinion" page in which readers write in with their comments and views on recent news. The following article from Wednesday's section was so good I thought it would be worth rewriting here: Socialists At The Top Bruce Olive, Durham, NC I spent all of last week in New York City, meeting with European clients. We dined in several restaurants frequented by folks from Lehman Brothers and Morgan Stanley, firms that moved to mid-town after 9/11. My Scandinavian clients, overhearing restaurant conversations and observing the week's events, couldn't help but point out to me the irony of the American capitalist system. Coming from fairly socialist countries, it was obvious to them that American capitalism really exists only for the worker. At the top of the ecomonic heap, America is firmly and completely socialist. We have a government that treats itself to nationalized health care but not the rest of the nation, ensures its own pension structure, but not that of the workers, and does not hesitate to use the little capitalist worker bees' tax dollars to bail out the socialist billionaires. So the next time you hear someone rail against national health care and how it will turn America into a (gasp) socialist country, let him know we're already there. It's just that it occurs behind a thin veil surrounding the wealthy in Washington and Wall Street. --Raleigh News and Observer "The People's Forum", 24-Sep-2008 -- % Randy Yates % "Bird, on the wing, %% Fuquay-Varina, NC % goes floating by %%% 919-577-9882 % but there's a teardrop in his eye..." %%%% <yates@ieee.org> % 'One Summer Dream', *Face The Music*, ELO http://www.digitalsignallabs.com

Yep I support it. I don't come from the US of course and anything to further its demise would be a good thing surely. (Since they appear to spend most of their money on bombing otehr countries). Hardy
