Optical Glyph tracking

I saw a nifty episode of "Prototype This!" the other day that used the 
above vid technology.  All my prelim searches just yield the youtube video, 
and not an algorithm.  Can anyone point me to something more useful??

Don't know how useful this might be, but a friend of mine is
into motion tracking, position estimation etc, from video.
Could glyph tracking be something similar? E.g. a glyph
recognition front-end, instead of a object recognition unit,
which then feeds a porition tracking algorithm?

Just speculations...
