I was once in a large windowless basement room, the entrance to which was a corridor with a closed fire door at its end. The room was mostly empty, and all walls were concrete or cement block. When the lights went out, I had no difficulty locating the corridor by clapping my hands and listening. I had supposed that the absence of echo from the corridor would guide me, but I was wrong. The sound traveling down the corridor and returning created a distinct delayed echo that was a good guide.
