Converting from stereo to multichannel format.

Started by Vij Kal VijayaRaghavan Kalyanapasupathy January 6, 2004
Hello,

Can someone point out how to convert from stereo (in PCM 2 channel 16
bit 44.1 Khz) format to 5.1/6.1/7.1 channel sound formats.

I have songs that on CD's. I tried using the Dolby Pro-Logic II
setting on my receiver/amplifier to see if surround sound effect was
available. It didn't turn out too well. I wanted to see if its
possible to try and write a program to convert the CD audio to AC-3
for example.

Does this make sense?

Your question is a really good one. I don't know myself how to transform stereo to multichannel but I know some literature could be interesting for you. Here is the link: http://www.aes.org/journal/sample_issue/JAES_V50_11_PG914.pdf
I don't know the answer, but it seems there are actually 2 separate issues
here: 1) the sound format itself, and 2) creating multi-channel audio from
stereo. The first one is probably pretty straight forward and cut and
dried. It just requires access to the particular file or transmission
format and then putting your 2 channels into that format. The second is
probably a more artistic process.
