SB16's FM synth is the best synth second to FS1R Sample-playback synths, analog synths, and FM emulators are shit galore!!! Why even make fermented sampled audio, virally-invaded analog, or the cheap cheat crap of emulators? I have listened to sample synths, analog synth (in a store, that is), and FM emulators. They all STEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Sample-based synths are rigid in their aliasing (highs are cut off). Analog synths suffer the discord of hiss and static with the slightest of surrounding electrical equipment. FM emulators have an obvious fake sound and place a tremendous strain on the CPU ;-) SB16 PCI is shit-composed substitute for the clean SB16 ISA. SB16 PCI has no FM synth. SB16 PCI is human excrement!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SOUNDBLASTER 16's FM SYNTH ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!

But one has to use its sparsely documented SP-DIF output and an external converter for quality sound to occur. The AWE64 had the wave table MIDI synth and a SP/DIF output for both MIDI and WAV output.
