If anyone has been wondering, I am and have been fine. I hope to get
back into the swim soon.

Jerri, It is good to hear that you do well. BTW, what was the quote in your signature about "your rights are guaranteed in no greater or lesser extent then the rights of the most abhorrent ones" ? VLV

Jerry, it's good to hear from you. I'm looking forward to your input. -- My liberal friends think I'm a conservative kook. My conservative friends think I'm a liberal kook. i sorta pay attention, Jerry. but this time i wasn't worrying. some time ago (maybe it was a year), i did have a concern and posted as much to the newsgroup. keep us informed. haven't been to NYC since last October (the AES), and don't expect to be around again until next year. i hope to connect one way or 'nother, Jerry. "The rights of the best of men are secured only as the
rights of the vilest and most abhorrent are protected."
           - Chief Justice Charles Evans Hughes, 1927

I don't believe than many modern-day Republicans would write that.

The parties have changed. I grew up in the South where the Democrats were the party of the KKK, passed Jim Crow and segregation laws, voted against the Civil Rights acts and implemented poll taxes. We even had Bull Conner (Birmingham Alabama) who institutionalized the using of the fire department to wash people of color away. I personally remember Lestor Maddox (Gov. of Georgia right before Jimmy Carter) standing in the doorway of his restaurant with an ax barring entry to persons of color. You don't have to go back to 1927 to find the last good politicians. Republicans were instrumental in passing Johnson's 1964 Civil Rights Act when the Democrats voted against it.

Sadly contemporary versions of both major parties are mainly concerned with getting reelected and not actually doing what is good for the country.

We are most definitely screwed!!

even though i was too young to vote, i remember the 1968 election that had an independent candidate named George Wallace. and he was previously a Democrat. that was, in my opinion, the watershed moment when the U.S. Democratic Party had a self-identification moment where they had to decide who they really were. Vietnam was happening, the Chicago riots, another George was the very next Dem party presidential nominee. so you can see which way the party moved. now, i think Jerry's point is that the author to this quote about protecting the rights of the abhorrent, Justice Hughes was the GOP standard-bearer at one time. would today's GOP be particularly sympathetic to that quote? i think not so much, but the ACLU and the liberals would call that an example of "statesmanship". same for Lincoln. same for TR. maybe even the same for Eisenhower (regarding his "military-industrial complex" quote).

when do we drop our pants and bend over? November 7th? -- r b-j rbj@audioimagination.com "Imagination is more important than knowledge."
As I said the parties have changed. But when it comes to protecting the rights of the abhorrent, look at who is complaining and who is not complaining about the "video" that was claimed to spark the recent embassy attacks on 9/11resulting in the death of an ambassador. I don't think there is a clear and cut dividing line between the parties as each party chooses to protect a "right" when it suits them and weakens it when it suits them. Certainly the government's asking UTUBE to remove the video goes against the 1st amendment involving government and its limiting of free speech. Of course UTUBE exercised their rights and refused removal of the video.
