Greetings, I recently purchased Lyons book since I would like to teach myself some DSP. From what I could gather with my two days of lurking he is (was?) a poster here so the name and the book should be familiar to some people here. If someone has the book, would you mind explaining to me what I'm supposed to do in the problem 1.23 (both a and b)? I don't really understand the question. Thanks in advance!

Oh, by the way I didn't post the question since I'm not sure of that is allowed or not. Would someone be kind enough to let me know?

Rick is here regularly. 2. The first question he will as will be "What edition?" Then he will give you info on receiving errata. As to your immediate question - quote it. I have an early edition - no question 1.23 Welcome ;)

I would write and complain.

The web site you so carelessly posted is breaking copy law. I didn't work eight years on my book so that crooks could profit by stealing my work and making it free. Downloading free copies of copyrighted material is immoral. I wish you had not posted that web page. That's very bad for me. Shame on you man! [-Rick-]

The purpose of Problem 1.23 was to have the reader think about how an ideal square wave is the sum of an infinite number of sine waves of different frequencies. Part (a) of the problem wanted the reader to subtract a specific single sine wave from the ideal square wave. I assumed the reader would draw an ideal square wave, and below that draw the specific-frequency sine wave. The draw the resulting wave form of the sine wave subtracted from the square wave. Part (b) of the problem asked the reader to think about what must be an amplifier's "passband bandwidth" in order to amplify the "ideal" square wave in order to increase its peak-to-peak amplitude. I wantted the reader to think about what is the bandwidth of the ideal square wave. Hope that helps. If not, please let me know, OK? dspjoedsp, I can send you the appropriate errata if you can tell me the "Printing Number" of your copy of the book. You can determine the "Printing Number" of the 3rd Edition of my book by looking at the page just before the "Dedication" page. On that page (before the Dedication) you'll see all sorts of publisher-related information, including the ISBN-10 number. At the very bottom of the page you should see lines printed something like: Text printed in the United States on ... First Printing indicating the "First Printing" of the book. However, for later printings the second line above may have words such as: "Second Printing" or maybe "Fourth Printing". Also dspjoedsp, thank you for buying a legal copy of my book. Regards, [-Rick-]
