I think this books has some good info on compressors (at least single-band): Digital Audio Signal Processing by Udo Z�lzer (Author) For multiband compressors, once you have a single-band version working, my understanding is that you just split up your input signal into a number of bands, run the single-channel compressor on each band, then re-combine at the end. Obviously, care must be taken in the splitting and re-combining to avoid distortions. Theory from designing cross-over filters might be useful here. In my opinion, it is not extremely difficult to implment a basic multiband compressor. But doing it so it sounds "good" may take a fair amount of skill and tweaking time. It's one of those "the devil is in the details" things.
