This looks really good. They are moving forward.

Hey IEEE, why haven't you done a few articles on this? This blows the
whole, feeble green energy/smart grid/blah-blah-blah marketing crap into
the dust.

-- Randy Yates Digital Signal Labs http://www.digitalsignallabs.com Yeah but I tend to believe this video which points out a few problems... well, maybe 20E12 problems... http://machinedesign.com/blog/solar-roadways-only-one-way-find-out-if-they-are-pipe-dream?NL=ED-07&Issue=ED-07_20140617_ED-07_560&YM_RID=philip.martel@baesystems.com&YM_MID=1471941&sfvc4enews=42&cl=article_12
It you believe one guy's unsupported doubts, well... He sounds like a
one-off nay-sayer with nothing really to say except, "I don't believe
this will work."

i wonder how well this would work with the ground settling that causes potholes. and frost heaves. roads don't stay nice and smooth forever. -- r b-j rbj@audioimagination.com "Imagination is more important than knowledge."

I think it's a nifty idea on the surface, but I don't think that it's going to take the pounding that a well-traveled urban road has to take. I think the idea will remain cool and sexy right up until they put a test section on a slice of I-anything and try to keep it running for a year. -- Tim Wescott Wescott Design Services http://www.wescottdesign.com

It would be ok for your driveway instead of the roof of your house - or as well as. A well weathered road and it will be in tatters within months.

I don't think "earth shaking" is a good thing. I live next door to the nuke plant that was hit by an earth quake a couple years ago. The dry storage casks *moved* for the first time in nuclear history. I don't want the earth to move. Just give me logical, simple, *evolutionary* change, not *revolutionary* change.... Besides, this may sound like a "great" idea, but I didn't see any mention of cost. How can it be profitable to put solar cells underneath all the cars in parking lots? -- Rick

That's kinda my thought. But if you look on the website, they're pushing an urban solar interstate. It _might_ work as the shoulder on an interstate highway -- but not the main pavement. -- Tim Wescott Control system and signal processing consulting www.wescottdesign.com

As compared to the one-off yea-sayer with nothing to say except, "whoa dude" and "Solar freakin' roadways!". This is an idea that will never make it to reality. It is just *way* too expensive and many of the functions they describe are contradictory. Heating panels that cover the solar cells for example. -- Rick
