Well a Brit developed the original web, which is about as close a match to "invented the internet" as you can expect a journalist to get.

Now that the Internet has become a consumer environment, as opposed to a technologist's environment, the consumers of Brit see WWW as the Internet, and it seems that Tim Berners-Lee lays claim to having devised what led on to WWW>
