The Human Voice has been widely characterized, correct?

Of all the possible sounds, since the day the ear was invented, the one 
that has been most widely studied and *characterized* is the Human Voice.

While that statement is a wild/educated guess of mine, I do not believe 
I am not too far from the truth.

There *must* be some software/algorithm somewhere that works like this:

% IsThisHumanVoice  someaudioclip.wav

The output would be Yes/No or perhaps some number from 0 to 100.

Version 1 of that software would simply ascertain whether the standard 
human throat and vocal chords (sorry, professor Stephen Hawking, you do 
not qualify here) are physically capable of such utterance, in any 
language or mix. Primitive grunts, etc. would tend to be positive. 
Sneezes and burps would not.

[My question is: Where on earth can I find such software, web page, 
paper or book about it? But let's add more for the sake of completeness]

Version 2 would go a step a step further: "that sound qualifies as 
English language".

Version 3 and beyond would be voice recognition, but I am NOT interested 
to go that far.

Before I was pleasantly surprised to discover this NG, I posted the

I am reassured to see that -contrary to many Usenet NGs- this one 
(comp.dsp) seems to be alive and kicking.

I took some signal processing classes last century, and just figured 
that by now it would be possible to accomplish this simple task:

Take a recording that contains voice plus *very* obvious (to a human 
ear) extraneous sounds (humming, clicks, whatever) and clean it up.

How hard can that be???

Gee, of all the possible sounds in the planet, human voice is the most 
studied, characterized, cataloged, cadenced, sequenced, etc. Isn't it???

Is there any progress in the matter?

While the mentioned application is a tall order, I have an important factor that plays to my advantage. The application that I want may spend a whole night trying all kinds of approaches. There is nothing I hate more than the "wine glass" or "metallic bubbles" produced by overdoing the removal of information. I am willing to wait hours to get rid of the noise *without* paying with the acceptance of that unnatural/unprofessional noise. -Ramon pd: Incidentally, in one of the books I glanced, I found that the real-time requirement can be *extremely*, matter of life-or-death relevant: Noise Reduction in communications between an airline pilot and the control tower ("Houston, we have a problem"), or submarine, or troops in enemy regions.

As luck would have it, the Sound Cleaner II application comes with 7 preset clips and guess which one is included? My ear is not my best attribute, specially in the presence of noise and/or music (even in my native Spanish) and therefore I will refrain from attempting to close-caption it. Normally we use classification methods eg SVM - a bit like speech recognition. You need of course a data-base or Corpus to train your system. There are a number of such Corpuses online eg TIMIT. Then you need features of course and that is a bit experimental as to what to use. You can use Cepstral coefficients (MEL frequency cepstrum) as a starting point but in the literature some use up to 8 features.

In theory, what I need is the UNION (in the set theory sense) of all the speeches ever uttered by human beings since the vocal chords were developed. You guys will notice that, being a lazy guy, I am taking the opposite (easy) route. That UNION is my universe of sounds that will be considered positive by my system. The rest (Boolean complement) is negative, ergo noise and do not belong in the audio clipping that I am trying to clean.
