I think that would be a fairly popular climate. Its a highly variable, always unpredictable, PITA climate. There is only a very small probability of your actually liking the UK weather, rather than merely tolerating it. This is based on the UK's population containing so few people who actually enjoy its climate that they don't even register in climate popularity surveys. Is that better? :-) Steve

] Is there any DSP Engineer in this Group from Australia or New Zealand ] to share work experience and DSP future? Some on the group (Andrew Reilly, Allan Herriman) appear to be in interesting DSP jobs in Oz. I found it hard to get anything particularly interesting: just academic jobs in which the pay is awful and the politics worse. Ciao, Peter K.

Historical note: I don't remember the exact date, but it was many years after I joined Lake before we made our first local sale. That might mean that our marketing folk spend more time in aeroplanes and other countries than they would if they were based somewhere with a larger local market. Not sure, though. I suspect that's the same everywhere too. The big difference, then, is that we accumulate more frequent flyer miles, because the first leg is always at least 9 or 13 hours... There are quite a few (not by US or EU standards, I'll admit) other DSP-related companies locally, though. Just off the top of my head, there's Fairlight and DEQx, on the other side of the bridge, doing audio (at least), and lots of other folk working in communications (both voice and transport issues) and defense-related DSP (sonar and radar mostly). A couple of Uni friends of mine work(ed) on the over-the-horizon radar project, for example. That's a very neat piece of DSP. Ten years ago, my choice was move to Sydney or stay in academia, because there weren't any other DSP jobs in Brisbane. Having just spent the previous 20 years in academic institutions --- if you count pre-school :-) --- was certainly an influence towards moving. Sydney turned out to be a really nice place to live, too, which is a bonus. I've gone sailing after work for a couple of hours, recently, now that daylight savings has kicked-in. Coleagues who live in Bondi surf before coming to work. Cheers, -- Andrew

Although I wouldn't rate it as the pinnacle of dsp engineering work, it isn't exactly barren either. Probably on the same scale as down under, but with a different accent of course Ah, but perhaps I should be quiet, more jobs for me. QN

But it's a smaller community, obviously, then the states. For what it's worth, the pay is generally less there too. From what I know, Canada's DSP positions right now are almost off limits to anyone other than Canadians. The reason being that thier IT market has been pretty depressed for a while. And although it's starting to come out of it, there are still many Canadians to fill the positions ( thanks to huge layoffs at Nortel, etc ).
