[FAR OT] retail GPS solution

Started by Richard Owlett April 13, 2005
I'm looking for a device which will save time and position information
for a 12-14 hour period. WAAS accuracy proffered but not required.
Automatically saved at ~1 minute intervals preferred. ~100 manually
triggered recordings acceptable.

An *absolute requirement* is computer interface -- USB preferred.

My local retail outlet thought several Garmin products might fit my
requirements but did not have detailed info as my spec is to say least
"ATYPICAL" ;)

GARMIN, in phone call gave me brush off.

Ideas anyone?
Is there a known good and appropriate newsgroup?

To paraphrase - tell me where to go ;}

Thanks again for tolerating strange/weird/???? questions.

Can't record the output of the GPS with a micro or dsp to a compact flash or sd/mmc ? Just bought myself a LassenIQ from a local supplier http://www.stepgps.com/products/trimble/lassenIQ.htm and base pcb with usb from sparkfun (lot cheaper than Trimble starter kit) http://www.sparkfun.com/shop/index.php?shop=1&cart=220834&match_criteria=all&rec=&keywords=lassen+iq& http://www.sparkfun.com/shop/index.php?shop=1&cart=220300&cat=63& http://www.sparkfun.com/images/GPS/Lassen-IQ-EVK1-0.jpg The Lassen IQ is made by Trimble http://www.stepgps.com/products/trimble/lassenIQ.htm Alex
Hello Richard,
I use a Garmin GPSMap60CS. It may be more than you need. Is your unit
going to be attached to a computer during the collection process or is
the data to be downloaded later? Most of today's GPS's have serial
ports and support multiple protocols.

A few years back I used a Trimble gps module that was 25 dollars. You
needed to add an antenna, but it had a serial port so you could easily
attach it to a PC. It was only 1 inch square.

http://delorme.com/gps.htm Talk to their help people to see if you can get the information you need to write your own software and how to use their DLLs. Sometimes, they can be helpful. Serial OK. Being lazy I lean to USB ;)

Anyone that specifies their address to 1/1000 of a second can not be all bad ;) Actually I require downloading to a PC at remote location. [ aside to Jerry -- See response _I've not yet written_ to your reply to my MPG post. Short form "The answer you receive depends on the question you ask" ;/ ;] I'll have to browse the rest of their site.
Hello Richard,
The cheap module I used was the Lassen SQ, which has now been
superceeded by the LassenIQ. However with the SQ (I have no experience
with the IQ) you have to take the data as it comes. The unit will not
store data points for later retreival. Check the IQ's datasheet to see
how it works. I know it is backward compatible to the SQ module. I
recall the powered antenna costs more than the module itself.

You may wish to search for a USB gps module that is powered from the
USB port. I believe there are some of those for around 100 bucks or so
and they are complete GPS units. Just plug them in and they start
working.

DeLorme's Blue Logger GPS Receiver would be perfect if USB. Their whitepaper, "Using the Blue Logger GPS to Monitor Speed" http://delorme.com/bluelogger/images/MonitorSpeed.pdf on page 4 demonstrates downloading data to a spreadsheet. This is almost exactly how I had envisioned working. I have no need for the maps capability. Low cost is a priority as one time project. The $150 is just past my threshold so additional cost and bother of adding Bluetooth to my desktop puts it over the top.
