alas, an electrical engineer since Armstrong, getting wide attention that's deserved.

Armstrong was a great engineer. One of the finest. I've done a lot of research on regenerative receivers so obviously I have encountered his work multiple times. Shannon of course was a consummate theoretician. Any society that allows both practice and theory to prosper will do well.

Which Armstrong ? Edwin Armstrong ? The inventor of FM radio ? Indeed this society treated him so well that he stepped out of the window of his NYC apartment...

Didn't he have a dispute with Motorola over patents?

Close - think it was David Sarnoff / RCA.

This seems a good overview on what happened: http://www.damninteresting.com/the-tragic-birth-of-fm-radio/ -- Randy Yates, DSP/Embedded Firmware Developer Digital Signal Labs http://www.digitalsignallabs.com

And Heaviside. And Tesla. -- Rob Gaddi, Highland Technology -- www.highlandtechnology.com Email address domain is currently out of order. See above to fix.

More with Sarnoff @ RCA. Armstrong was a principled man. He tuned down a big settlement because he felt that to accept it would have been unethical. He got trod upon in the "Channel 1" cutover as well. I hate to be this way but he sort of needed adult supervision. Some guy like Sarnoff would eat his sort for breakfast. -- Les Cargill

And yet Sarnoff and Edison still count among the "greats". I guess it's good that accomplishments stand regardless of personality, but there do seem to be many cases where it seems appropriate to add the asterisk, "Was also a raging asshole."
