yeah, pieces of it. but he did add some serious spokes to it (i think the reconstruction half of the sampling and reconstruction theorem). being a graduate of the U. of North Dakota, i've always been a Nyquist partisan, but credit to where credit is due. Rimmer, you need to tell us a little about yerself. i hadn't seen you in these here parts until just recently. -- r b-j rbj@audioimagination.com "Imagination is more important than knowledge."

He's credited with embellishment, not invention. Regarding the sampling theories, I'd agree that Shannon's contribution was pretty much just a restatement in terms of Information Theory. In Information Theory, though, he did more or less the equivalent of starting with whole cloth and producing the unified field theory. His foundations for information theory have been essentially unchallenged and unmodified until only the last few years. That's a pretty significant contribution, IMHO. ;) Eric Jacobsen Minister of Algorithms, Intel Corp. My opinions may not be Intel's opinions. http://www.ericjacobsen.org

Cheers!! What about little old us in the UK (remember, a small island, east of you!!). I'm sure we invented a few things too :-D Ta, Carlos
What has been challenged in Information Theory in the last few years?

(Genuine interest)

Andor

Haha, that reminds me: one day in class, our assistant, a Russian mathematician, started his lecture as follows: "The well known Russian mathematician Euler already knew, that ... " which caused a burst of laughter from the students. The class was held in Zurich. Regards, Andor

Well, snake oil has been proposed as a method to lubricate a channel well enough to push additional bits through it. :-) Regards, Steve

I remember trying to understand popularizations of his work shortly after he published. Exciting stuff!
