Jerry Avins wrote:> http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/08/nyregion/08baby.htmlWe have one of the world's lowest crime rates, so we let our kids wander around pretty freely from the time they could walk. Stories like this make me realise what a risky strategy this is. I guess the forces driving the kind of person that would do this are unconstrained by effective policing. Loonies can strike anywhere. My God Jerry. I can't begin to imagine what you must be going through. All I can offer are my thoughts and prayers for your Granddaughter, you and your family. Please take care and be strong. You have a worldwide community of freinds whose hearts, I'm sure, are with you right now. Dave.

I'd seen the headline previously but to discover that this is a relative of a friend is pretty shocking. You have my most heartfelt wishes for a full and speedy recovery for your grandaughter, and sympathies to you and your extended family. I'm glad that help arrived quickly and that a suspect is already in custody. That could have gone a lot worse than it did. Eric Jacobsen Minister of Algorithms, Intel Corp. Hard to believe. Keeping my fingers crossed for her Jerry. Give her mum a big hug. Best of Luck - Mike

I hope to be forgiven for this wholesale thanks. Barring a disastrous complication, Izzy is expected to make a full recovery. She is as well attended as any mortal can be. My sister did her pediatric residency under the present head of pediatrics at the hospital, and my nephew's wife is on staff there. The reports from all sources are good. The nanny refuses to leave Izzy even to eat; a nurse brings her food. There is a nurse in continual attendance, and one of several doctors (including the head of pediatrics and the chief pediatric surgeon) stop in several times an hour. Izzy's intestine was (is!) severed and her aorta was nearly severed. The nanny -- they don't make many like that -- held her in a way that reduced the bleeding enough for her to survive the trip to the hospital. The aorta was repaired, but the intestine has to wait. Something to do with the subsidence of swelling. The present thinking is that the intestine can be rejoined and the wound closed later today or early tomorrow. Izzy's response so far is along the best-case track, given the circumstances. We can only wait. It is surprising that she didn't die early on, but we seem now to have reached the point where it would be surprising if she did. Thank you all. My son's firm -- he's a lawyer -- has a limo waiting at the hospital to take the nanny home whenever she'll agree to stand down. They must have dispatched a relief driver by now.
