Isn't there a canal to Chicago? I don't know if upstream on the Saint Lawrence is easier that on the Mississippi -- certainly not if they won't let you through the locks -- but it's a thought. I grew up along the lower reaches of the Hudson river. There's a lot of water there, but I was really impressed at Confluence Park at Cairo (pronounced Karo, like the syrup) where the Ohio (formed at Pittsburgh by the Allegheny and Monongahela) joins the Mississippi. I tossed a stick into the Mississippi just upstream of the confluence. It was whisked away so fast that it was hard to follow. Rivers run slower near shore, and the river was well over a mile wide. A 14-foot open boat came by upstream hugging the shore, 25 horsepower (I could read the adornment) outboard at full throttle, going no faster than I could walk along the bank. I don't think swimming up the Mississippi is such a good idea after all. I think you are right. You could connect that way to the Mississippi. There are a lot fewer poisonous snakes, etc than you might encounter by swimming from the mouth of the Mississippi. There are many locks on the Mississippi as well. No one said swimming here would be easy. I prefer airplanes and cars. -- Al Clark Danville Signal Processing, Inc. -------------------------------------------------------------------- comp.dsp conference July 28 - Aug 1, 2004 details at http://www.danvillesignal.com/index.php?id=compdsp email: compdsp@danvillesignal.com Who says you can't teach an old dog a new DSP trick?

Ah yes, forgot about the mighty Mississippi. Neat. I used to swim some, but probably not up for that one. Ha. Robert www.gldsp.com ( modify address for return email ) www.numbersusa.com www.americanpatrol.com

Not too mention the toxic runoff from the farms of several states along the way. Just read the dead zone in the Gulf, from all of it being deposited there, has widened this year. Robert ( modify address for return email ) www.numbersusa.com www.americanpatrol.com
