Lyons' DSP book: 1st vs 2nd editions

Started by _DS March 6, 2006
Does anyone happen to know what changed with the 2nd edition of Lyons'
DSP book? Is it mostly additions, or is the text re-edited?

Also, what's with the Chinese printings that I've seen? Are those
'pirate' copies, or are they (low-quality?) legitimate printings for
overseas markets.

I have both editions of Rick's book. He has added a lot of new content and it is well worth buying the newer edition even if you have the older. If you don't have the older, buy the newer version, not a used first edition. Rick's book is excellent. I often refer to it even though I have about 50 different DSP books.

I have no idea. Buy a "real" copy. Rick need's to be able to buy me a beer once in awhile. -- Al Clark Danville Signal Processing, Inc. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Purveyors of Fine DSP Hardware and other Cool Stuff Available at http://www.danvillesignal.com

The chinese printings have only front page (including the copyright info) and back page in chinese and english. The main text of the book is still in english. I think its cost is some where around 12US$. This is what I have seen in the market. so if Rick has permitted the chinese publisher than he is still getting some money to buy a half glass of beer for Al Clark. gold

I've orderd my copy through amazon. The quality of the printing, paper and the binding are a little bit disappointing. It looks like it has been printed on an ink-jet printer. I'd buy a chinese copy, it can't be worse. (The content is great, though.) Chris

Hi, The 2nd edition book contains, roughly, 200 pages of new DSP material beyond the 1st edition. *** Some Info on the 2nd Edition *** The 2nd edition expands a bit on several of the topics covered in the 1st edition; such as FIR and IIR filters, and the DFT. In addition, the 2nd edition's new material includes: 1) Expanded "quadrature processing" coverage including three-dimensional drawings to help the reader understand these two-dimensional quadrature (I & Q) signals. This is a tricky subject for beginners in signal processing, so I kept my coverage as gentle, thorough, and practical as I could. 2) Coverage of the Hilbert transform, theory and practical implementations, along with several techniques to generate an quadrature (analytic) signal from a real signal. 3) A new chapter on not-so-well-known FIR filters called: "frequency sampling", and "interpolated FIR" filters. These computationally efficient linear-phase FIR filters deserved coverage in a textbook. 4) Additional coverage of multirate systems (decimation and interpolation); including both an introduction to polyphase filters and a fairly detailed description of cascaded integrator-comb (CIC) FIR filters. 5) The book's 1st edition had 12 "tricks" in the popular "DSP Tricks" chapter. I've expanded that chapter to 33 separate DSP tricks. Regards, [-Rick-]

Hi gold, the Chinese folks negotiated with the publisher because the publisher owns the book rights, not me. My royalties from that Chinese-cover English-text version of the book were essentially zero. The book has been translated into Chinese. I'm tryin' to get my hands on a "Chinese" version, but I've unsuccessful so far. See Ya', [-Rick-]

Hi Chris, I also bought a recent copy of my book from Amazon. I noticed that some of the shaded drawings didn't look right. Quizzing my publisher, I learned that they used a new "Printing Company" to print the 6th & 7th printings. The publisher told me they'll be using the original "Printing Company" (who printed the 1st-5th printings) from now on. This is good. Chris, send me an E-mail and I'll send you the errata. Reagrds, [-Rick-]

... But it still claims that ax^2 + bx + c has two factors.
