IEEE Explore

Started by Peter K. September 27, 2006
Hi All,

I have been trying (and failing, mostly) to use IEEE Explore to search
for articles etc. recently.

Has anyone else had problems?

I've contacted the IEEE (both member services and the ombudsman)
because I think the way it currently doesn't work is a tradgedy.

I would encourage any other IEEE members to also make their feelings
know.

If you disagree, please let me know about that too... maybe I can't
drive IE or Firefox?

Thanks,

Peter K.

I don't even get to the ieee.org frontpage. But then, I'm browsing via a very low capacity link. Rune

I haven't used their search engine, but I have gotten plenty of articles off of Explore after Google Scholar (which is fantastic) pointed me at them. -- Scott Reverse name to reply

Yes, that' s part of my gripe: free services like Google and Citeseer tend to do a better job than the search facilities on Explore. They'd be better off just making the content available and cutting a deal with Google for appropriate indexing and availability through something like Google Scholar. I don't want my member dues wasted on poor services. Ciao, Peter K.

You're not missing much, unfortunately! Ciao, Peter K.

The IEEE journals are already indexed at google scholar. There are options for "library" patrons to automatically get links. Info can be found at http://scholar.google.com/intl/en/scholar/libraries.html. I suggest contacting the IEEE electronic librarian with this info -- Scott Reverse name to reply

It does work if you use to correctly. You need the right keywords though. M. -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com
Hello Peter,

IEEE has the unfortunate tendency to over-sophisticate just about everything. I made my feelings known numerous times but it feels like kicking a big oak tree. For example, about the virtual communities which IMHO are a full-blown failure. Ok, now I am on a team there to evaluate other options but my wish to at least try out a simple newsreader format have not been heard :-(

Web services should work (and be tested!) with all popular browsers, plus be tested for sufficient simplicity and low-BW dial-up connections. Not everyone lives in broadband areas or can afford it. Unfortunately that is not understood by many IT "experts". Certainly not at IEEE. -- Regards, Joerg http://www.analogconsultants.com

Rubbish! I use the right keywords, and it doesn't show up items that I know are in there. The system is broken and should be removed; as Scott pointed out, Scholar does a MUCH better job of indexing than IEEE does itself. Ciao, Peter K.

Peter, can you give a specific example and let me try on my end? I'm pretty sure I'll get the same results - I just want to see it for myself. -- % Randy Yates % "So now it's getting late, %% Fuquay-Varina, NC % and those who hesitate %%% 919-577-9882 % got no one..." %%%% <yates@ieee.org> % 'Waterfall', *Face The Music*, ELO http://home.earthlink.net/~yatescr
