noise removal

hi everyone,

does anyone of u knws how to remove noise in a graph?its kind of a new
thing because normally we hear bout how to remove noise in an image.

please let me knw if anyone of u knw.thnx.

      i agree with jerry..try to use MA filter to remove out spikes
(noise) ..

by the way...can you tell the nature of the graph..i mean does it
follow any particular pattern or so...

wait..can anybody..tell..if i know..the nature..of the signal. i mean
to certain extent...i can use the wiener filter right..

I don't know what you mean by "graph", but if it's a one-dimensional data series, simple tools at your disposal include: 1. Lowpass filter 2. Highpass filter 3. Median filter John

Well removing noise in a graph is hardly new. I'm sure you did graphs in high school and you drew a best fit straight line through the data. That is a type of noise removal. If you want to do exactly that, then look up linear regression. If not, then you will need to elaborate a little more about what you really want and need. Clay

If you think your oil well graph might be periodic you can even use autocorrelation to find out a few properties which would be difficult to see in a graph with noise.. like frequency..

Is wavelet denoising an option? I've seen papers on this subject though it always seemed like a fairy tale. If I know my signal waveform, I can use a matched filter in either the frequency domain or in the time domain. In seismic work, the high frequency components disappear quickly so a matched filter might be time varying.
