Pitch shifting and playyback speed changes FAQ

Started by Richard Owlett April 19, 2007
A friend came across some software for changing playback speed without
distorting pitch. I know I've seen a FAQ that covers the application.
Where should I refer him. He's a musician with a BSEE.

Hi Richard, The main FAQ for the group is http://www.bdti.com/faq/dsp_faq.htm. -- % Randy Yates % "...the answer lies within your soul %% Fuquay-Varina, NC % 'cause no one knows which side %%% 919-577-9882 % the coin will fall." %%%% <yates@ieee.org> % 'Big Wheels', *Out of the Blue*, ELO http://home.earthlink.net/~yatescr
You are joking, right ?

Have you read the FAQ yourself before suggesting it to somebody else ?

This is utter bilge creating nothing but confusion.

There's some discussion of theory at http://www.dspdimension.com/ Jerry -- Engineering is the art of making what you want from things you can get. ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯

Didn't seem like a joke to me. Seems like a perfectly fine general FAQ to me. I even had it bookmarked even though it was the one I was thinking of. CHILL ;]

That's the one. Especially http://www.dspdimension.com/index.html?timepitch.html .

"Q2.5: How does pitch perception work, and how do I implement it on my DSP chip?" Considering the fact that nobody knows exactly how human pitch perception works how can you possibly implement it on a DSP chip ? Aren't you supposed to know exactly what you are doing before you even touch the damn chip ? I don't even want to discuss the references they suggest - utter bilge like I said...

Perhaps a better title would be "pitch detection" (taking into account known perceptual aspects). Fortunately, for this basic task (identifying the pitch of a (pitched) source relative to the Western scale), we don't need to know how "exactly". Had we waited until this exact knowledge was obtained, the whole highly-successful pitch/MIDI conversion industry would simply not exist. To say nothing of query-by-humming services, voice-tracking karaoke, etc. Exactitude is not always possible. Sometimes a little fuzziness works pretty well (e.g. time/frequency tradeoff, which applies to the human ear just as much as to a pitch detector).

Unfortunately "utter bilge" is not, as far as I am aware, a technical term. Perhaps you could elaborate. And suggest some non-bilge references ("ballast"?) instead. Easy to make unsupported judgements (and always useless to the reader) - but on this list it is preferred that some supportive evidence be proffered! if you have better references, I am sure the FAQ writers will be happy to consider them.
