(i would think that celebs needed unlisted numbers back then.) wasn't it "CUMMINGS E ------------------- 617 555-1234" ? about Fred Harris, i noticed sometime back in the 90's that he was publishing papers with his name in all small case. it wasn't that way in his classic windowing treatise. maybe he has changed it back. who knows? just in case anyone starts with "pot calling kettle black", when i type "real" documents (for distribution or publication), i *do* try to use proper capitalization and usage (with a capital R, B, and J). but my coding (C or asm) or internet/email persona is small case, except where caps serve a specific purpose (like most #defined constants or for emphasis or yelling online). i also try to appropriately cap other persons' names so as not to offend or presume. but this habit of laziness has, admittedly, become a sorta adopted style for the context it is in. hypocritically, r b-j

My understanding is that the upper case name in the windows paper was forced on him by the editor. He was using lower case before that, maybe 1974. My recollection is that it was related to e. e. cummings. That was a long time ago and he was only working a couple of days a week at the place where I was working. He was also consulting at Spectral Dynamics about that time as\s well as teaching. My boss's number could only be reached through an operator. It was "Maynard 689M2, please". ... I would recommend his course, if he was just teaching about making soup. I have sat in several of his lectures, and they were all very worthwhile. He also wrote a very good multirate book a few years ago. -- Al Clark Danville Signal Processing, Inc. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Purveyors of Fine DSP Hardware and other Cool Stuff Available at http://www.danvillesignal.com
