MLSE tutorial

Started by sl2096 October 11, 2007
Would some one be able to suggest a good tutorial or explanation of a
general implementation for a 4 or 8 state MLSE equalizer for GSM ? I
understand the theory, but would like an explanation of how, for a
specific case/example, locations on a constellation are assigned to states
and the best way to compute metrics. Preferably, something with
illustrations/trellis diagrams would be nice. Thank you.

B. Sklar published a nice tutorial on that topic a while back in IEEE Communications Magazine called "How I Learned to Love the Trellis". John

Also available in IEEE Signal Processing Magazine: How I learned to love the trellis Sklar, B. This paper appears in: Signal Processing Magazine, IEEE Publication Date: May 2003 Volume: 20, Issue: 3 On page(s): 87- 102 ISSN: 1053-5888 INSPEC Accession Number: 7623271 Digital Object Identifier: 10.1109/MSP.2003.1203212 Posted online: 2003-06-11 15:49:40.0 EB

Thanks for posting the complete reference. I must have remembered the magazine wrong. Anyway, this article was really helpful to learn how a Viterbi decoder is applied to an equalization problem. I took what I learned from it and applied it to a Bluetooth system. Sklar has a knack for clear explanation, like Rick Lyons of Understanding DSP (and comp.dsp). John
