Completely off topic. Some people are never wrong

Started by Jerry Avins December 19, 2007
My gentle bitch squatted over a bit of lawn this morning while we were
on our morning walk, and then moved on. A solitary walker scolded me,
"You're supposed to clean up after your dog. Some people have no shame!"
I told him that I do, and pointed out the newspaper bags I keep tied to
the leash. He said that I had evidently ignored a turd, and I asked him
to show me so I could get it. We walked back to where Poochina had peed
and he pointed to an object of the right color, shape, and size, but
entirely wrong texture. I picked it up and held it out to him: "It's a
pine cone." He sneered, "Weird dog. Shits pine cones!"

Siberian Husky. She just turned 16; the picture is a year old. Snow delights her. She dug a hole in it and just sat. The snow on her is what was falling. There was nothing on her when she first sat in the hole. It accumulated while I got my camera. It's 30F outside right now. She's lying on the bare ground and doesn't want to come inside. Seen head on, in black-and-white, coloring and features are like a wolflike. No wonder for a Husky. I once met a guy with a sledge and four dogs in the Hardanger Vidda in Norway on a cross country ski trip. He had slept in a tent at -35 degree Celsius in the night. His dogs slept outside in the snow - you could see small hills of snow with just the nose sticking out. The dogs were two Huskies and two greenland dogs. Later in the day he passed me and we talked for 5 minutes about the trip and the dogs, and then he said that he must continue otherwise the dogs would faint because they are getting too hot when stopped immediately. Imagine: too hot at maybe -20 degree Celsius! I asked him what happens at summer time with these dogs, and he just said: "They don't feel well in summer". And the norwegian summer is quite cool (although sometimes it can be hot). bye Andreas -- Andreas H&#4294967295;nnebeck | email: acmh@gmx.de ----- privat ---- | www : http://www.huennebeck-online.de Fax/Anrufbeantworter: 0721/151-284301 GPG-Key: http://www.huennebeck-online.de/public_keys/andreas.asc PGP-Key: http://www.huennebeck-online.de/public_keys/pgp_andreas.asc

This looks better on my monitor. The original looks very nice with my printer on photo paper. I'll print yours and see.

That's an excellent monochrome rendering. Did you simply use the intensity axis in hue-saturation-intensity space? Poochina was our reward for being good neighbors. A neighbor's friend died, leaving Poochina to be cared for. The surviving brother's lease didn't permit pets, and we agreed to care for the dog until brother's lease was up and he could find a new apartment. (The alternative would have been costly and confining boarding at a kennel.) She was to have been with us for four months, but it's been a bit over two years and the brother hasn't been heard from. No matter; Poochina is ours now. It's time for our daily walk. We usually go about a mile. Bye! The difference between display and print can be enormous if you don't have consistent adjustment and workflow. My monitor (HP LP2065) is not calibrated but it is adjusted so that at least the contrast levels of a few % above black and below white are visible. At home I have a Samsung 204 which is also adjusted (not calibrated) and 1% above lack and below white is visible. Also the visible contrast on paper is much lower than on screen, so it is possible that a low contrast picture which looks dull and flat on screen looksfine on paper.

I used gimp to transform it from color to BW, and then used the 'curve' tool to adjust intensity and contrast. At last I sharpened quite a bit (filter->enhance-sharpen = 55). The best monochrome renderings I managed so far was using the 'Andy' Black&white plugin in bibble (this is a raw converter, but it can handle jpg as well). bye Andreas -- Andreas H&#4294967295;nnebeck | email: acmh@gmx.de ----- privat ---- | www : http://www.huennebeck-online.de Fax/Anrufbeantworter: 0721/151-284301 GPG-Key: http://www.huennebeck-online.de/public_keys/andreas.asc PGP-Key: http://www.huennebeck-online.de/public_keys/pgp_andreas.asc
