Any comments or opinions about John Proakis' book, "Digital Signal Processing (4th Edition)"? Due note, this edition is supposed to be different from the 3rd. Is this a good DSP book if you already own Smith's and Lyon's books?

Proakis book has been my all time favorite. I have seen the 4th Edition and seems more or less the same. If I remember properly one new chapter has been added on adaptive filters. some chapters on multirate and sampling and reconstruction have been modified and some new material got added on DCT. I think this is a must have book for people working in the area of DSP. I do not have Smith's book, but I do have Lyon's book. Ha ha. As for their 4th edition, if P&M have indeed added new multirate processing material, I'd like to see that. (Typical textbooks on multirate processing are pretty hard to read, in my opinion. I'm not being critical of the authors of such books, it's just that multirate processing is a very tough subject to explain. I have a small amount of multirate processing material in my book, and if I ever publish a 3rd edition I'll do my best to provide more multirate processing material than I have so far. I believe multirate processing is far from intuitive.) By the way, I found a fairly detailed description of the changes from P&M's 3rd edition to their 4th edition. That description is at: http://www.amazon.com/review/product/0131873741/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt/103-4074302-4918248?%5Fencoding=UTF8&showViewpoints=1 See Ya', [-Rick-]

In fact the reason I started this thread is because there were only 3 reviews and none recent. Thereby I wanted to see what the people here have to say about this book.

Thereby I wanted to >see what the people here have to say about this book.Hi Stacy, Well, when a book is published (as far as my experience shows) it takes a year or so for 10-15 legitimate "Customer Reviews" to show up on Amazon.com. If you see 5-10 Customer Reviews just a few weeks after a book has been published, there's a high probability that those reviews are fraudulent. This happened to me when I was looking for a book on OFDM. Years ago I read many wonderful reviews for an OFDM book and I bought the book. The book turned out to be the most poorly-written, unprofessional, error-prone, shameful, piece of crap technical book that I'd ever seen. When I went back to check those Customer Reviews I noticed that they were all posted just a few weeks after the book was published. So I believe those Amazon.com Customer Reviews were posted by someone who had a vested interest in selling that OFDM book. I.E., I think those reviews were fraudulent. So Stacy, don't worry that there are only three reviews for the new Proakis book. It takes a long time for *legitimate* reviews to accumulate. See Ya', [-Rick-]

It seems questionable enough (and expensive enough) to warrant a first-hand evaluation. If the book is as changed as the review says, then you might want to try to get a used copy of the third edition instead, especially if you're looking for basics. -- % Randy Yates % "Remember the good old 1980's, when %% Fuquay-Varina, NC % things were so uncomplicated?" %%% 919-577-9882 % 'Ticket To The Moon' %%%% <yates@ieee.org> % *Time*, Electric Light Orchestra http://www.digitalsignallabs.com

I missed the original post so I'm not sure what Stacy is looking for. That said, I think Proakis is one of the better DSP authors. I don't have a copy of the 4th edition, but I do have the 3rd. If I could only have a half dozen DSP books, Proakis might be one I would keep. Al Clark Danville Signal Processing, Inc.
