Converting Scalar Samples to Complex

Started by John E. Hadstate March 13, 2008
Does anyone know a robust method for converting a stream of
scalar data to a stream of complex data in such a way that Zero
frequency in the old spectrum remains Zero frequency in the new
spectrum?

Yes John, Is so symple you must feel embarassedment. Multiply every sample in scalar data by same complex constant with non-zero imaginary part. Easy way is take each sample and put in both real and imaginary part of chorresponding complex sample (same as multiply by 1+j ). Method is ssssoooooo rrrooooo busty, it NEVER FAIL. Other ways can also be done, but there is charge (Euros pleas) for that. But your post does not make clearly why you care to do such a silly thing, at least silly as you say it. Do you wish to ship yore job to India? I can get you good commishion. Regards, Kamar Ruptan DSP Guru

Excellent writing skills, too! A true GURU in many senses of the word. Curious Mr. Ruptan: Why stop at "DSP GURU" instead of going all the way to "GOD"? What do the terms 'scalar' and 'complex' mean here? A measurement can be viewed as a collection of N scalars or one N-length vector. A scalar or vector can be real-valued or complex-valued. The scalar -> complex conversion is a bit like converting from apples to oranges. Or do you ask how to convert a real-valued scalar to a complex-valued scalar? If so, the simplest way is to add a zero imaginary term, y=x +j0. Rune

Mr Randy, You are DSP Smartass. :-) Good for you to use in title. DSP God would say exceeding the manny DSP gurus that post here. I not say that. Then, is question of which god to be same as. There are so many. The Ancent Greek God of Electronic Calculation would be closest, and don't want to piss him off! Note your word "DSP GURU" awfully close to "DSPGURU" which bothr Mr. Grant Griffin. thanks, Rune, for asking the question(s) i had about this. i suggest that we (as a group) focus on DSP issues and ignore the self- promoting posturing from DSP WANNABEES who, from ignorance, arrogance, desire, and insecurity, have overrated themselves to quite a degree. (Kamar, get your PhD, if you can, and continue to grow in wisdom and stature, if you can. you have plenty room to grow and to grow up. believe me, you don't wanna become another eBob or Beanie, here. you'll never gain any respect here, or any community, by dropping in out of nowhere and demanding respect, particularly a level of respect that you show to no one else. people here, and in other communities, are pretty smart; you greatly underestimate that, particularly in relation to your estimate of your own knowledge and abilities to know or do anything useful.) r b-j

Mr BJ, You seem to have problem with me. You criticise me but do not criticise my technical comments. I will complete PhD much sooner than you think, not that it is youre business, so don't ask. Your problem is personal with me. You are like unhappy old village woman. I am little snotty to OP because he ask such a useless not specific question so that a correct answer is of little value. Both Rune and I give correct answers to poorly worded question, so answers have bearly chance to be useful. You do not give criticism of answers, you do not give criticism to OP for stupid question, you just give your old woman rant. Why not open your mouth for technical criticism, if you sooooo smart. If you want to continue personal attacking, then get a cownselor or GFY (that is not "girlfreind", Vlad can translate to you). Maybe you are just a biggit with big set of insecurities of yore own. Regards, Kamar Ruptan, DSP Guru (at home with the many unbigitted DSP Gurus at comp.dsp)

Look schmuck: if you your PhD teaches you no more than life has so up to now, you won't get very far in any profession.

John Hadstate has a long history here, and has accumulated some respect. A stupid question from him deserves probing to see what he really meant. You may have meant your first response in that vein, but it went a bit too far. Your subsequent remark to Randy was over the edge.

Many people will have a sharp word with you from time to time. If you turn every such occasion into grounds for all-out attacks on your colleagues, you will close all available doors.
