Rick Lyons gets two attaboys

Started by Unknown May 5, 2008
Hello All,

In the May issue of Sig. Proc. Mag., Rick gets mentioned in two
different articles. One is the announcement of his award for best
column. Rick can now buy us all beer. And the other is the review of
his latest book "Streamlining Digital Signal Processing." The reviewer
really loved the book. He also cited Greg Berchen's article as his
personal favorite. So let's all give Rick a big congratulations for
two jobs well done.

Did you notice who wrote the book review? ;) Eric Jacobsen Minister of Algorithms Abineau Communications http://www.ericjacobsen.org

by the smilie face, i am suspicious that it's someone else we know here. i dunno, i haven't held an IEEE document of any kind for years. (and hadn't been a member except briefly as an undergraduate student in the 70s.) r b-j

I've held very few documents in the last few years. PDFs are so much more searchable. :-) Steve

Of course I saw who wrote the review! Al was spot on about the practicality of the book. Which of course goes way book to how Rick become editor of the column in the first place. Practicing engineers need effacacious articles. And Rick complained to the IEEE about their many articles that seemed irrelavent and they got him to put his pen where his mouth is. Clay

I had to write the review, I was the only one left here who didn't contributed a chapter. Al Clark Danville Signal Processing, Inc.

Al, you know Rick is looking for a few good DSP men - you already demonstrated you can write, and I know you are proficient with DSP, so you ought to put together an article. I already have another in queue. Clay
Congratulations Rick!

There are two kinds of engineers (except for Rick), those who can't write and those who can barely write. I aspire to be included in the latter but its a struggle. What everyone knows who contributed a chapter (or who wrote a review), is that IEEE has editors, including Rick, who can turn a sow's ear into a silk purse (or in my case, a silk sow's ear). I struggle to write user manuals, web site content, etc now. I have had an idea or two that might be a suitable trick, but time is something I don't have a surplus of. Speaking of tricks, I really like your sine oscillator method (Chapter 20). I knew the basic calculation, but not the trick to keep all the numbers in bounds. I will probably write a SHARC version the next time I need a sine generator. Al Clark Danville Signal Processing, Inc.

Hi Clay, Thanks much for the kind words. As for that "Best 2007 Column Article" award, that was sure a surprise to me. Like I said in some past post, I voted for three different "DSP Tip & Tricks" articles (none of which were mine) to win the award. That shows you how much influence I have with the IEEE folk! I was thrilled to read Al Clark's well-written review of the "Streamlining DSP" book. Al *EXACTLY* recognized, and succinctly described, the intent of the book, which was to provide descriptions of "tried-n-true" DSP tricks written by working engineers who actually developed those tricks. Al, bein' the honest guy that he is, did comment on his disappointment that the book did not contain any software code. As it turns out, there is some MATLAB and C code related to the book's chapters. That code can be found at: http://apollo.ee.columbia.edu/spm/?i=external/tipsandtricks One little side note regarding the book: One of the book's Contributors is the famous Charles Rader, one of the *TRUE* pioneers of DSP. (I won't list his profound accomplishments in DSP, nor his list of awards, here.) Last Fall when I sent an E-mail to Charles, asking if he'd received his complimentary copy of the book, he replied saying yes he did receive his copy. And he stated: "Some of the papers I see a second time around will actually be useful to me." A comment like that meant a great deal to me, comin' from such a famous DSP researcher/pioneer! See Ya', [-Rick-]
