You really need to look into one of the training courses offered by Rick Lyons first. After you have a better understanding of what DSP is, you will have some grounds for approaching the DSP devices themselves.

Most motivated individuals that want to attend a training class do so because they want to increase their level of understanding in a subject, but in a shorter period of time than it would take to thoroughly digest all of the documentation. They know that they will still need to refer to the technical manuals for the detailed information for implementation, but through training, they expect to have gained confidence in that they are making the correct high level decisions. As the instructor for the Analog Devices embedded processor workshops, my goal is to get individuals to understand what the capabilities are of a particular processor architecture (Blackfin, in this case) and how best to use those capabilities. This also includes understanding the VisualDSP++ development and debug environment, compiler capabilities, System Services and Device Drivers, and application frameworks (ie how to tie all the pieces together). We don't get into DSP theory or vacation planning. The next Blackfin class will be held at U of Saskatoon the week of Jun 2-5.
